Frequently asked questions

Q. Are they qualified?

Your carpenter should have a minimum of a Certificate III level qualification in Carpentry. Some carpenters will have taken a further Certificate IV level qualification in Building and Construction.

Q. How can I check if a carpenter is licensed?

The most important thing to remember when choosing your Carpenter is that they must be licensed with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) (formerly the Building Services Authority). The QBCC is a government statutory authority established to regulate the building industry, and to provide information and advice to consumers and contractors throughout Queensland.Any contractor performing building work over the value of $3,300 must hold a QBCC licence.

To check if a contractor is licensed you will need to call theQBCC, performing an online licence search or simply asking to see the contractor's licence card – this will ensure the builder is qualified and will protect you under the QBCC’s insurance scheme, which insures your home against major defects for six years and six months.

Q. Are they adequately insured?

The type of insurance required will vary according to the type of work being undertaken, but be sure to ask your carpenter to explain (and prove) what he is covered for. Public liability insurance is a must.

Q. What do their previous customers think?

Check their testimonials and ask them if you can speak to a satisfied customer. After all a customer who was happy with the work done will be more than happy to talk to you.

Q. How well do they present?

Communication is key when engaging a tradesperson, so pay close attention to the way they deal with you, from the very first point of contact. How long does it take them to respond? Are they reliable and pro-active? Do they keep appointments? These might seem like small details, but being alert to both positive and negative indicators could give you an invaluable insight into your carpenter’s work ethic before you commit.
